Today Tikkler, a German Twitter clone, launched an affiliate program with zanox. On the bottom of their homepage they implemented Googe AdSense. Now my questions is, if you’re a professional affiliate, would you seriously send users to a site where they can click on ads and leave the site? I’ve also seen many advertiser landing pages with toll-free phone numbers and that kind of stuff. I doubt that the sales coming over the phone will be tracked correctly.

So if you’re an affiliate, don’t send traffic to landing pages with any type of distraction. Whether it be phone numbers, email addresses, links to other sites, or ads, they all kill your conversion. These advertisers either try to rip you off or they have no clue about online marketing. In any case, you lose! Just some random thoughts before leaving for the weekend …

I just got back from the opening event for zanox’ new Global Alliance Partners Campus. It’s an office space right next to the zanox headquarters serving as an incubator for new publishers. As far as I understand affiliates can use the zanox premises to work on their projects for using zanox as their affiliate and tracking network in exchange.

At the event zanox also promised the development of various APIs in order to let advertisers and publishers access as much information as possible without the usual web interface. In theory developers would then be able to create as much as their own sub-affiliate networks.

All this is a great step forward and convinced me that they are Germany’s most relevant affiliate network. They may not be the number one in terms of traffic yet, but they will be. Competitors are too far behind and way too slow to catch up. Good stuff, guys.

Zanox doesn’t want any new affiliates, it seems. At least they don’t want to pay for them.

Zanox used to run a a snowball system as you might know it from multi-level marketing. Existing affiliates that acquired new affiliates received a percentage of the new affiliates’ regular commissions on top of their own direct commissions. So if you focused on bringing quality affiliates to zanox regularly, your monthly income would grow steadily. Some of the pioneers of affiliate marketing made a real fortune out of this and made their personal dreams come true.

Now zanox have decided that these alpha affiliates that continuously bring in new affiliates aren’t good enough for them anymore. They’re getting rid of the lifetime payout and now pay you a lousy 6 to 8 euros. Also these leads are not confirmed for payout unless the newly acquired affiliate generates at least 50 euros worth of commissions.

Let’s have a closer look at this: If an affiliate earns the threshold of 50 euros from an advertiser, zanox is earning somewhere between 10 and 15 euros from that advertiser already. That is their agency fee, so to say the cost for using the affiliate network, which is usually between 20 and 30 percent of the rewarded affiliate commissions. What are they giving to the affiliate? 6 to 8 euros. Now you figure out why that is!

Instead of publishing countless videos that nobody wants to see, zanox have finally started blogging. Professional affiliates work efficiently. They won’t watch hours of videos with little information. They consume information via RSS including filter rules and all that. Well done.

Zanox introduced a new layout for their web interface. I find it really ugly. A crude orange on a white background doesn’t go down too well.

Warum bei Wordpress so absolut gegen Affiliate-Links vorgegangen wird ist für mich nicht verständlich. Erstens sollen Leute, die guten Content schreiben, auch dafür belohnt werden können. Und zweitens ist es auch möglich dass z.B. ein gemeinnütziger Verein sein eigenes Merchandising über Partnerprogramme von Online-Shops abwickelt und die Provisionszahlung durch Zanox erhält. Außerdem bietet Zanox ja auch noch sein sogenanntes “Fundraising@” an, womit wohltätige Organisationen über Zanox-Spenden-Shops Geld sammeln können.

Zur Lösung dieses Problems gibt es viele Möglichkeiten. Hier sind drei einfache:

1. Ihr nutzt nicht wordpress.com sondern installiert die Applikation auf Eurem Server.
2. Ihr benutzt für die Links eine andere Domain (nicht die von Zanox) und nutzt Weiterleitungen.
3. Ihr nutzt kein Zanox sondern weniger bekannte Affiliate-Netzwerke.

Die Katze ist aus dem Sack. Nach langen Verhandlungen ist der Deal nun perfekt. Die Gründer von Zanox sowie ein asiatischer Investor machen Kasse und verkaufen Ihre Firma für knapp 215 Mio. Euro. Die Axel Springer AG übernimmt 60% der Anteile, die anderen 40% gehen an die Schweizer PubliGroupe AG, eine Marketing-, Verkaufs- und Dienstleistungsgruppe für Medien und Werbetreibende. Beide Firmen wollen dabei ihre Positionen im Online-Marketing verbessern.

Als Ziele werden genannt:

• Investition in stark wachsenden Markt des erfolgsbasierten Online-Marketing (Multichannel-Commerce)
• Erschließung neuer Marketingformen im Online-Vertrieb
• Ausweitung der Aktivitäten im digitalen Geschäft
• Stärkung des weiteren internationalen Wachstums von zanox
• Entwicklung neuer Produkte und Technologien und Erschließung neuer Kundengruppen geplant

Es ist geplant, unter der Marke “zanox” in Zukunft zwei Gesellschaften tätig werden zu lassen, die in die Konzerne der beiden Käufer jeweils integriert werden. Die Zanox-Gründer Thomas Hessler (CEO), Jens Hewald (CTO) und Heiko Rauch (COO/CFO) werden zunächst im Unternehmen verbleiben und die beiden Gesellschaften leiten.

Nach einem Bericht von Dow Jones Newswires möchte die Axel Springer Gruppe das Affiliate-Netzwerk Zanox kaufen. Einen entsprechenden Bericht gibt es seit gestern beim Manager Magazin. Die Gründer von Zanox möchten Kasse machen und suchen schon etwas länger nach einem Käufer. Da Zanox seine Produktpalette über das Affiliate-Tracking hinaus erweitert hat, ist die Zukunft von Zanox für die gesamte Werbebranche interessant. Nachdem Tradedoubler für 900 Millionen verkauft werden sollte und DoubleClick für 3.1 Milliarden über den Tisch ging, wird Zanox irgendwo dazwischen liegen.

Auch nach der letzten Erneuerung der Statistik-Funktion bekomme ich bei gesetztem Häkchen immer noch die Nullzeilen angezeigt.

Ich kann die Nullzeilen erst nach dem Fahren der Statistiken durch Klick (Javascript-Effekt) verschwinden lassen. Ich finde das ziemlich nervig, da ich bei vielen Partnerprogrammen angemeldet bin und für die meisten kaum aktiv bin.
