Absolutely – I wholeheartedly agree.

The possibilities using HTML5 and CSS3 (and JS of course) are absolutely amazing, and so far, I can’t see *any* kind of web application / animation anymore which would absolutely depend on Flash.

Apart from that, of course, it is way easier to develop anything in HTML5/CSS3 – if you have ever used that horribly bloated platform and IDE which is Flash, you’ll probably know what I mean

Flash was good in the Flash 4 days, without all that Classes and AS1/2/3 bloat.

If PHP is not relevant tell that to facebook with 800 Million Users, Google and Yahoo… who use PHP and wordpress that use in this site. Its easy to make things hard and hard to make it easy. Only people make hard to theme selves like java do.
I recommended both PHP and Java but more favor on PHP

WordPress.com blockiert nicht nur Zanox sondern auf anderere Netzwerke, wie z.B. Affili.net. Man könnte zwar den link mit einen linkshortener cloaken und den Banner als Image in den Blog stellen. Die meisten Affiliatenetzwerke erlauben es aber nicht, dass man den HTML-Code der Werbebanner verändert.

Hi,

Well, it is difficult to give a general answer to the question: “java, or php?”.

I am a java programmer. I know also asp.net very well, various versions, worked with .net 1.1, 2.0 and 3.*

For personal stuff, Java hosting is expensive, .net hosting is either too expensive or too unreliable. Also if you have 20 websites and 19 are with wordpress (php), developing the site number 20 in Java will make the deployment environment very difficult to configure and maintain.

So for personal purpose I work with php

I see the following pros:

- Cheap infrastructure
- Reliable solution (at a Java solution peeking daily at the logs to see potential errors is a must,while at php this is not the case).
- Documentation available everywhere
- Free

However you cannot overlook the cons:

- Weak typing – much more difficult to write the php code than the Java one. Modern editors – like Eclipse PDT I am currently using only partially provide intellisense.
- Arguable namespace implementation – personally I don’t use namespaces because of that
- C based plugins – you never know what is in store for you, maybe the next version of that fancy php plugin you use will not work, or maybe the windows version will work fine and the unix one will not. On the contrary, Java is full stack – all you need can be embedded as a library in your app, and you know for sure it will work on any valid application server
- Relatively slow language (real time interpreted)

So again, it is a mixed world out there – php is not the best technology available, however it is there and at least personally I have to use it (I wrote some personal stuff in .net and Java and had to rewrite it in php). Java is much better but you cannot use it in 100% of the solutions.

Personally, for personal projects I am stuck php. Not that I like it – actually I don’t, but here I am working php apps

You might also want to check out Open Web Analytics (http://www.openwebanalytics.com). It too is a PHP/MySQL alternative to Google Analytics but has some different features than Piwik including click Heatmaps and mouse recordings.

somehow google-analytics has taken over my computer despite the fact that I have no website. I do not remeber ever subscribing to google-analytics. Yet every time i search anything on google search my search is redirected to google-analytics or to results5.google and the loading takes many minutes or it is not completed. I cannot find a way to unsubscribe. I have tried to phone google in California and in Canada , where I live, but I am get on the lne for hours at a time with no one answering. I am 67 years old and I feel that my privacy has been violated!Help please. Wilson Parasiuk

Mit Erstaunen habe ich über Ostern verfolgt, wie Apple den hype um den ipad zelebrierte. Aus psychologischem Gesichtspunkt sehr interessant, wie erst der Hype aufgebaut wurde und dann medienwirksam in Dollars umgesetzt wird. Wir werden sehen, wie dies im Mai in Deutschland ankommt. Meiner Erfahrung nach sind die Deutschen nicht so leicht auf einen Hype zu setzen. My Comment is different, i am waiting for a time where database manages this better then language. once the database performance gets increased most of the programming language can do better jobs.

Its on database we have to give more concentration. Languages are only mediators.

Java and PHP. two are not good.

Why should we want to stick will an intermediate language like this better we can go for C++ or c compiled language .

Will can give high performance.

So my conclusion is,
1. Database is the main part need a good optimisation in performance.
2. Me frameworks have to be developed in c++ or c so that other can do web projects in these language. perfectly.
3. Both Database and language should have a good garbage Collection Methodology.

4. Good IDE for developement. with lots of auto generate facilities.

Postview-Methode ist ja gar nicht so schlecht, man kennt halt als Affilate, dass viele User Ã¶fters erst spÃ¤ter kaufen.

Die Umsetzung ist nicht so schwer, vor allem wenn man berÃ¼cksichtigt, dass bei mehreren Merchants und bei seriÃ¶sen Netzwerken nur noch die schriftliche Genehmigung zu holen ist. Sprich: die genaue ÃœberprÃ¼fung, die zwei Provisiionen fÃ¼r ein Sale ausschlieÃŸt.

I have heard too many times people give the “php is not scalable to enterprise levels”, “java does enterprise well”. I dont think that I can speak to this first hand.

What I can say is, that I touched both languages and ultimately chose php for its quicker ramp up, ease of use, ease of reading, no headaches for overhead. Java functions, in the past, were hard for me to lookup, understand. Say I wanted a simple existing function that searches a string for a sub-string. It took me ages to find with java, and the code was ugly to read once implemented. Php I found the function in under a minute of searching its docs, and the code was very understandable.

I was coding very small programs for myself and my work basically, NOT enterprise or professional level. So, I always trusted what others said: PHP doesnt scale. Well, now that I have seen a .php stuck into one of the pictures at facebook…. facebook is the ULTIMATE of scaling. I mean, really you cannot scale to more users than that. There really is nothing currently higher in users that I can think of.

I think that PHP can be easy to use/learn, and dangerous to scale. But, if done right apparently, it can shoot you to the moon.

I am going to learn Python I think. It is a mix between java and php qualities. Python is more heavily object oriented and strict and enherently scalable, yet it too is script-based… it compiles as you run it. No need for go-live or compilation headaches.

It should also be noted that this article is quite incomplete. After Google received the wrist-slap for tracking users of the .gov sites, and was told to *NOT* track users unless they click on the video — they told the public that they had made this change, but it was a lie. Instead of Google removing the tracking cookie, they merely changed its form. Now they don’t use a standard web cookie, they switched to using an Adobe Flash based cookie, which is much, much harder to detect and remove. Very few people even know of the existence of Flash cookies!

How would they enforce a law that would make literally hundreds of millions of web sites illegal?

I am absolutely opposed to corporate tracking cookies, they are simply vile. I just don’t see how the EU could even hope to police this. But if it stops at least the big 7 or 8 names from tracking (#1 being Google), it would be an enormous boost to free information and privacy.

It is sad how Google now forces the google.com tracking cookie to everyone who wants to use *any* service owned by Google. There used to be a gmail.com, now it is gmail.google.com, so that it falls under the same google.com domain name. This way their tracking cookie is not a “third party” cookie. It’s simply evil. I just discovered today that even YouTube accounts now *require* a google.com tracking cookie, this is just *so* wrong.

Hey Peter,
you’re right when you say we have to increase the efforts now where online marketing budgets are higher and the tracking becomes more and more important to budget decisions.
But I think you have to differentiate between the different industries. For travel websites or high cost electronik stuff like Apple, Dell or similar merchants I totally agree with you. I won’t make a decision to buy such stuff only because I saw it on a google ad or a banner. I use to sleep over such decisions at least one night and may be google for the merchant the next day and click on the first sponsored ad to finally buy.
But for low cost such as mobile entertaining, online dating, a lot of stuff at amazon I make my decision immediately and don’t buy a ringtone because I clicked on a certain banner 20 days ago.

Just a little correction. Piwik is afaik not based on OpenX, but a rewrite of phpMyVisites. However, there is a connection between Piwik and OpenX, as the lead developer seems to be working for OpenX and OpenX seems to be sponsoring the project somehow.

And you are right: it is PHP based.

Good and important post, Peter. Any avenue that allows for a possibility of cookie stuffing by an unethical affiliate should be closely monitored by merchants, their program managers AND affiliate networks (too frequently the last two parties prefer to be silent about issues, because they are often financially interested in seeing more sales driven to the merchant whether the affiliate has really added value or not).

Has SuperClix supported the post-view tracking before? I don’t know of one affiliate network that does that.

@Shah,

use PHP. Java is for very big projects with its advantages of good refactoring. Given the time, you must go ahead with php and use Kohana framework (MVC architecture) for good understanding and practices. This gives you a good understanding of OOP and atleast one Design pattern.

At a later stage, learn Design patterns in java (particularly adapter pattern), JSF, JPA and you are to market.

Looking even further, start learning a function/OO hybrid language like Scala which will replace java eventually. (2 years time)

As far as I understand is Piwik based on OpenX which is a PHP application. So no Java or .NET.

zanox understands, that a couple of employees can never ever be as creative and innovative as the “croud” of people (like you) can be! So, opening up for external developments is a means to enshure future innovation power!

BTW: The IT-cost were much lower without the application store. Development, maintenance and service (app. review, etc.) will cost a hell lot of money…

I have read most of these comments and still not sure to start learning more java or get to know php coding at an expert level. Am actually a masters student. We have been taught JAVA and is very boring when it comes to write codes. After Masters, my intentions to pursue a carrier in programming. Right now, I have to start my final project of web application for a shop and have only 3 months to complete it. Should I continue doing JAVA as I have learned it some how in the past 6 months, or work on PHP for it if it’s more demanding at a professional level.

I agree with the two comments above. When looking at enterprize applications, there are other issues which crop up. Like what happens when a low level programmer gets hold of your code. Or when the business needs to develop a complex feature. What about adding the ability to expose functionality as web services in a robust manner, without affecting application availability. Or having accurate debugging and performance statictics.

Having “dirty code” code in your any application is like having cooking oil in your Ferrari engine. And sticking one’s head in the sand with regards to enterprize issues is just shoddy.

Anybody who has worked at the enterprize level should know this. There is nothing wrong with PHP or JAVA. They were built for different reasons.

If you need an enterprise-level, high-performance web application, then choose Java. The fact that PHP is “easy to learn” is not relevant. The concept of implementing “dirty code” with PHP or any language is flat-out scary. For large projects, you’d better have expert developers no matter what the programming language. Also, the previous comments from SVachon are 100% accurate.

Your article is more on interpreted vs compiled languages. In fact, java is not compiled to machine code but into bytecode to be interpreted by the jvm. And I don’t think it takes a long time to compile java code, but I admit that it is longer than not having to compile at all. However, you don’t have to compile your Jsp pages. Pages and classes can also be hot redeployed individually on the fly, hence you “can change the website instantly and seamlessly so that deployment isnâ€™t really a big issue.”
I think one of the main advantage of php over java is how easy it is to get an operational lamp stack so you can start working.
And finally I don’t think that showing as 404 status error page proves anything about php beign better than java. This is a developer issue, all sites can have broken links.

I have a similar setup to you with computers, and I’m making the move to the cloud, too.

But I decided to sell my soul to Google.

I got the Google Apps paid version of Gmail last summer and started pulling in my email accounts there as a redundancy to my PST file in Outlook.

But recently, I decided I’d had enough of installing loads of software every time I get a new computer, and also dealing with the dread that Outlook could screw up any given day.

It’s a little tough here and there to convert to Gmail from Outlook (the Tasks in Outlook have dictated my life for years), but the tools at Google, as well as third party apps like Remember the Milk have solved my problems.

Good luck with your move. I’m putting Outlook to sleep tomorrow – right after I bring my inbox to zero emails.

Hi Geno, unfortunately I cannot disclose any domains.
But I can tell you that I’ve had several cases where the right domain name increased the CTR by over 50%. I believe the domain name is the most important part of a search text ad.

Sorry, but I don’t see so much really new in showing IP address, user agent, referrering URL and conversion time. Several networks offer similar statistics at least for advertisers. Only the type of cookie (post click or post view) seem to be be additional. I also think, short conversion times are realistic, if the affiliate uses deeplinks and the customer is already registered at the merchants site. To check out at amazon after a price comparison takes me only some seconds for example. And I would say it’s nearly the same at other big retailer sites. In my point of view cash back is also even less a type of fraud than post view tracking (“legalized” cookie dopping). Anyway, the important thing is to explain the advertisers what these methods are about and have clear agreements with them.

I’ve never really got on with CJ. Although I use them, I had a rocky start. At first I got approved, but wasn’t having any luck with my promotions, so didn’t earn anything – so they just shut down my account. I contacted them and asked them to let me be approved again, which they did and I use them for 2-3 products only, but I have found them more awkward to use than other programmes. I stick with them though, even though I only make about US$40/month from the tiny bit I do with them, I can never tell when they will suddenly have a product I want to promote heavily, so I keep the account just ticking over.

I’d not recommend them to a new affiliatethough as I think their system of approval and finding products is quite hard to use. I dropped almost all affiliate networks once I discovered how easy Adsense was and am now slowly introducing affiliate networks back into my mix so I am not heavily dependent on Adsense.

CJ really should look at how their competitors do business.

Transmitting ones own business data to a competitor is a very good argument against Google Analytics that seems to be plausible even for those guys who cannot be convinced by privacy arguments.

Anyway, everyone should be aware that using Google Analytics is illegal under European data protection law (under almost any circumstances).

Piwik is a nice piece of software. I use it since about 3 or 4 months for four of my sites. The functionality is not comparable with Analytics but it is enough, if you make no money with your site and just wanna check the normal user stats. But you should have a fast server! My Piwik MySQL database is now more than 66MB big, after such a short time…

Lina hat leider keine Ahnung. Der HTTP-Header mÃ¼ss Ã¼bermittelt werden bevor irgendwelcher HTML- oder Javascript-Quelltext ausgegeben wird. Es ist nicht mÃ¶glich die P3P-Anweisung per Javascript zu Ã¼bermitteln. In Beispiel 2 handelt es sich daher nicht um Javascript sondern Java.
