Happy New Year! I’ve been moving since the beginning of the year. During that time I’ve been living without a television set in my household. And I have to say, I don’t miss it at all. Being without a traditional TV set for over a month made me realize what an old-fashioned broadcast television is. It is unidirectional and non-interactive so the freedom of choice is quite limited. Especially when you have little time you feel how much of a waste of time it is.
Don’t get me wrong, I still watch news, movies and such. But like a lot of my friends I’d given up on broadcast television stations and started creating my own program a long time ago. Here is how I see things:
News
On-demand available as streams or video podcasts. iTunes pushes the latest NBC Nightly News, BBC World News and tagesschau to the iPad and iPhone and I may or may not watch it. I’m also watching a number of video podcasts related to IT and marketing that don’t even exist on broadcast. This stuff has been a bless and it’s free. Definitely no need for broadcast television here.
Movies, Shows/Series
iTunes on the iPad or the Apple TV does the job. There is a free trailer for every movie. And I’m happy to pay a little bit of money to have the freedom to choose what I watch and when and where I watch it. It’s still cheaper than what most people pay for cable TV. How many movies do they really watch a month? Video platforms like YouTube and MyVideo have started publishing free ad-funded full movies too. And in the U.S there is Netflix. With broadcast television there is only little choice.
Comedy
YouTube is full of funny stuff, whether it be drunk penguins or some dude blowing up his car with an AK-47. Broadcast television will never be able to live up to the volume and pace here anymore.
Sports, Shows, Breaking News
To be fair, the live events genre is where the stations are still ahead. But that’s due to the nature of it. One usually doesn’t watch the Super Bowl on-demand three days later. The stuff is happening live and you want to watch it live. Same thing with the Oscars or the soccer world cup final.
But, besides live events there isn’t much need for broadcast television anymore. Instead of being told by the stations when to watch what I want to be able to choose the time and the content. The fact that most new TV sets have Internet and apps these days will continue to make broadcast TV the medium of the older generation.
